Rossi “pushing” for bezzecchi to stay at VR46
The 2025 rider market dynamics are revolving around double Grand Prix winner Marco Bezzecchi, as he faces a pivotal decision between sticking with his current VR46 squad or making a move to Pramac for the upcoming season.
Crucially, a transition to Pramac presents Bezzecchi with his sole opportunity to ride a works-spec Ducati in 2024, since VR46 is set to continue fielding year-old Desmosedicis.
In an interview with Sky Italia during the Austrian Grand Prix, MotoGP icon Valentino Rossi, founder of the VR46 team, revealed his strong desire to retain both Bezzecchi and Luca Marini for the 2024 season. Rossi emphasized that VR46's goal is to continue with its current lineup and encouraged Bezzecchi to place his trust in the team's capabilities.
While acknowledging that the official bike might not be available due to Pramac securing the other two official bikes, Rossi stressed that the support VR46 can provide to Bezzecchi is significant. Despite lacking the official bike, VR46 possesses a competitive machine this year. Rossi believes in the strong foundation they've built around Bezzecchi, including a high-quality team that positions him for success.
Rossi highlighted the challenges of changing teams, including the uncertainty of whether the chief technician would remain, and underlined the pros of continuity. By remaining with VR46, Rossi believes Bezzecchi can tap into the support and environment that has been tailored to his needs, increasing his chances of securing victories.
Meanwhile, Ducati's next move hinges on Johann Zarco's decision regarding his future, which is anticipated to be revealed soon. If Zarco opts for LCR on a two-year contract with Honda, Bezzecchi's potential move to Pramac could pave the way for Franco Morbidelli to step in. While Morbidelli has been linked to VR46, should Bezzecchi remain at his current team, he could secure a factory-spec Ducati at Pramac instead.
Notably, Pramac's sponsorship requirements stipulate the inclusion of an Italian rider, further influencing the ongoing chess game in the MotoGP rider market. As the rider decisions unfold, the balance of power and opportunities in the 2025 season is set to shift, leaving fans and teams eagerly awaiting the final outcomes.
