Pedro Acosta wins 2023 Moto2 world title

Pedro Acosta, a rising star in motorcycle racing, has secured the 2023 Moto2 world championship title at the Malaysian Grand Prix, adding another grand prix title to his collection. Acosta, set to join Tech3 in MotoGP, has made a significant mark in the paddock since his debut in Moto3, where he won the championship in his first attempt.

Acosta's journey began with a podium in his first race at the Qatar GP, followed by a victory at the Doha GP, starting from the pitlane. Moving up to Moto2 in 2022 with Ajo KTM, he achieved three victories and finished fifth in the standings. Staying with Ajo KTM for the 2023 Moto2 season, he dominated with seven race wins, ultimately outpacing his main rival Tony Arbolino to clinch the title.

His advancement to MotoGP in 2024 was confirmed earlier this year, with KTM activating his contract option. This decision came after extensive efforts to secure him a spot, leading to the reassignment of Pol Espargaro to a test rider role to make room for Acosta at Tech3.

Acosta has already had a taste of KTM's MotoGP machinery and is set to make his official debut in the class during the post-race Valencia test on November 29. Acosta's approach to his ascent into MotoGP has been described as unique by his future Tech3 MotoGP boss Herve Poncharal, with a notable focus on winning the Moto2 title rather than getting involved in the ergonomics of his future MotoGP bike.

His Moto2 team boss, Aki Ajo, views Acosta as one of the last of the "old school" riders, attributing this quality as a key factor in his success. As Acosta prepares to step into the premier class of motorcycle racing, his remarkable rise through the ranks and his championship-winning performances in both Moto3 and Moto2 mark him as one of the most promising talents in the sport.
