Trans Am mid season review

The National Trans Am Series has solidified its position as one of Australia's premier national racing categories in 2023, with an action-packed first half of the season featuring record-breaking performances, emerging talents, dramatic crashes, and intense qualifying sessions that have kept fans on the edge of their seats.

As a two-month hiatus between rounds offers competitors a chance to regroup and recharge before the Queensland Raceway event in August, let's reflect on the initial three chapters of this captivating season. The Symmons Plains Raceway set the stage for the season's debut, with current series leader James Moffat making a triumphant start by securing a flawless victory in all three AWC Race Tasmania races. However, the second race was shortened due to a substantial collision involving Ben Grice and James Simpson's Dodge Challenger.

Traveling north to the iconic Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for the second round in May, the competition delivered some of the most thrilling racing action of the year. Although Moffat was poised for a repeat performance, a mechanical issue in race one allowed experienced racer Owen Kelly to seize his first race win of 2023. Nash Morris capitalized on Kelly's absence from the winner's circle and showcased a defensive masterclass to claim victory in race two. Morris continued his dominance with back-to-back wins, including the closest finish in series history against Moffat in race three.

The third round saw the series transitioning from the high-speed Phillip Island to the technical Winton Motor Raceway in June, presenting a fresh challenge for all participants. AWC GRM's Lochie Dalton stood out during the weekend, converting a hard-earned pole position into his inaugural series race victory on Saturday. Dalton's momentum carried into the remaining races, securing a flawless three-win streak that intensified the championship battle.

With just four rounds remaining in the 2023 season, the competition is fierce at the top of the standings. A mere nine-point difference separates the leading GRM teammates, Moffat and Dalton, adding to the anticipation for the forthcoming rounds. Tom Hayman's consistent performances have earned him the third spot in the standings post-Winton, with challengers like Josh Webster and Owen Kelly in pursuit, setting the stage for a thrilling second half of the National Trans Am Series.
