Marc Marquez takes a Dramatic Victory at Phillip Island
Marc Marquez claimed a stunning victory at the Qatar Airways Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix after an exhilarating battle with title leader Jorge Martin. The eight-time World Champion secured his third win of the season, showcasing his resilience and racecraft at Phillip Island. Despite a slow start due to wheelspin caused by a tear-off, Marquez quickly fought his way back through the field, overtaking Franco Morbidelli on Lap 5 to enter podium contention.
Jorge Martin initially converted his pole position into a comfortable lead, but Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia gradually closed the gap. The race took a dramatic turn on Lap 12 when Martin ran wide at Turn 1, allowing Bagnaia to briefly challenge for the lead. However, Martin quickly responded, dropping Bagnaia back to third, and setting the stage for a thrilling three-way battle.
Further back, Enea Bastianini was making up ground, overtaking Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and launching a move on Morbidelli to secure fourth place. Meanwhile, Bagnaia began to lose pace, unable to keep up with the leaders, ultimately settling for third and taking home 16 points in the championship race.
As the laps ticked down, the battle between Marquez and Martin reached fever pitch. Marquez took the lead for the first time on Lap 24 with a bold move at Turn 4. Martin fought back immediately but was unable to regain the top spot, as Marquez’s decisive pass held strong. The two riders traded blows, but in the final lap, Marquez held firm, crossing the line 0.997 seconds ahead of Martin.
With this victory, Marquez not only celebrated a hard-fought win but also helped Martin extend his championship lead to 20 points over Bagnaia, who crossed the line third. The Australian Grand Prix delivered a spectacular race, with Marquez’s victory and Martin’s second-place finish setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the season.
