Triple Eight Race Engineering Celebrates 10th Bathurst 1000 Win Amidst Mixed Emotions

In a thrilling conclusion to the 60th anniversary of the Great Race, Triple Eight Race Engineering celebrated a record 10th Bathurst 1000 win. However, the elation was coupled with disappointment due to Broc Feeney's heartbreaking mechanical failure, which deprived him of a podium finish.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaros emerged as top contenders for the title, neck-and-neck with the #99 Erebus Motorsport Camaro. As the race progressed, Shane van Gisbergen solidified his lead, positioning Triple Eight for a probable one-two finish. Unfortunately, with only 25 laps left, a mechanical issue related to the gear lever mount halted Feeney's #88 Camaro.

The incident was especially gut-wrenching as a similar mechanical failure had plagued Triple Eight’s Supercheap Auto wildcard entry earlier in the race. Feeney’s untimely setback cost Jamie Whincup, Team Principal and Feeney's co-driver, a spot on the podium. However, Whincup expressed his immense pride in the team’s overall performance and the historic win.

Reflecting on the race, Whincup said, “To win this race is not about having the quickest car, it’s about all the one-percenters and all the attention to detail to make this a great team.” He further lauded the team's effort leading up to the event and their exceptional performance, culminating in their monumental 10th Bathurst 1000 victory in two decades.

Feeney, despite his disappointment, praised Whincup's drive and the team’s determination. “Jamie did a great job to get the lead off the start and pull a big gap,” the 20-year-old stated, though lamenting the finish in the pits due to mechanical setbacks.

Race winner van Gisbergen too expressed his sympathy for Feeney, acknowledging the young racer's impressive performance throughout the weekend.

The Bathurst 1000 victory adds another feather in Triple Eight Race Engineering's cap, already glowing from Feeney and Whincup's achievement at the Sandown 500. Van Gisbergen's potential third consecutive drivers’ championship title is on the horizon, rounding off a momentous season.

As Triple Eight Race Engineering reflects on two decades of dominating Bathurst 1000, the legacy of its achievements, from its first win in 2006 to its latest in 2023, cements the team's reputation in the annals of motor racing history.
